A
little Charlie Moss and Moss Landing History.
Moss Landing got its name from
Capt. Charles Moss. Charlie came to the central coast
in 1853 and leased land near the Elkhorn Slough. He
envisioned a busy seaport that would ship grain grown
in the Salinas Valley. Charlie’s business thrived
until the arrival of the Southern Pacific Railroad.
Charlie hightailed it back to Texas in 1875 with a quarter
of a million dollars – but he left the port with
his name.
Charlie Moss's Restaurant on Highway One joins our other
restaurants in Moss Landing: Phil's Fish Market &
Eatery, established in 1982 and Phil's Snack Shack &
Deli, established in 1996.
